The battle to lead Nigeria

                           The battle to lead Nigeria

With Nigeria’s presidential election commence today, two political heavyweights are competing to lead the African giant through a critical four years.
                                                           polling station
Why it matters: The winner will govern a country with massive unfulfilled economic potential and worsening humanitarian and security crises. There are fears a bruising and close-fought election could give way to violence and instability.
  • Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy but the government is almost entirely reliant on oil revenues. The country is ranked among the most difficult in the world in which to do business, due in large part to corruption and insecurity.
  • “Nigeria has a laundry list of challenges, and it’s hard to see any positive inroads on any of them,” says Matthew Page of Chatham House, a U.K. think tank. He says the question is: “Can they take them on or will they just twiddle their thumbs as Nigeria barrels toward this moment of catharsis?”
Incumbent Muhammadu Buhari made history in 2015 — three decades after he was toppled as a military strongman — by becoming the first opposition candidate to defeat a sitting president.
  • Buhari’s appeal rests on his incorruptibility, but institutionalized corruption remains unscathed after four years, according to Transparency International. He is accused of wielding his anti-corruption drive to hammer his political rivals while taking a far softer approach with allies.
  • It has been a grueling four years. Buhari has faced health struggles, economic headwinds and a relentless Boko Haram insurgency.
Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president, represents the People’s Democratic Party, which ruled Nigeria for 16 years until Buhari’s election. This is his fourth run for the top job.
  • Abubakar, a wealthy businessman, says he’ll open the country up for more investment. He has been dogged by allegations of corruption and “almost symbolizes” Nigeria's infamous system of political patronage, Page says.
  • As Max Siollun puts it in Foreign Policy: “It seems that voters can have a fight against corruption or economic stimulus, but not both.”
Both men are in their 70s. Both are Muslims from Nigeria’s north. Neither is proposing transformative reforms. “This is kind of their last bite at the apple before a younger generation comes in,” Page says.
The big picture: The population has doubled over the past two decades to 200 million and is set to double again by 2050 — at which time Nigeria will have the third-largest population on Earth.
  • Nearly 3 in 4 Nigerians polled told Gallup they struggled to afford food over the past year. They’re evenly divided as to whether things are getting better or worse.
  • Confidence in the fairness of elections is improving but still low, while confidence in the government improved after Buhari’s election but has ticked down more recently.
John Tomaszewski, Africa director for the International Republican Institute, says that beyond who wins, it’s essential that this election keeps Nigeria’s democracy moving forward.
  • What he’s watching for: Voter intimidation from police or security personnel, a lack of transparency from the electoral commission, long lines and confusion at polling places, and “tensions spilling over into possible violence.”

The bottom line: “Nigeria needs to get this right for Nigeria, first of all. That will have reverberating effects all around Africa but also for Europe. This is an important election for the world,” Tomaszewski says.

Is a 2.82 GPA in my first semester of college good?

Is a 2.82 GPA in my first semester of college good?

                                                                       students
The only reason I'm answering this question is because the other responses are horrific. You just did your first semester. If you are going for a 4 year degree you have 7 more. So the bottom line is you could have done better, sort of for 1/8th of the time which also happened to be your first shot at this. That's not that bad to be honest.
Let's say that is the gpa you graduate with, well then you will do just that graduate. You will have that degree in your hand. Grades are important but are nothing compared to the skills you learn. If that is your gpa but you have the best resume, or you know some important skill (as a example for me in mechanical engineering let's say the cad program solidworks) then you have put your efforts in the right place. You of course want as good of a gpa as possible but if it not perfect it really is not the end of the world. I would say 2.5 is where you want to start doing better.
There is always something you could have done better, but don't forget a winning attitude, endurance, strong skill sets, ambition, and ingenuity will always be the most important characteristics to maintain. Way more so than grades.

'Lecturers without Ph.Ds will soon not teach in Ghana's universities' - Education Minister

'Lecturers without Ph.Ds will soon not teach in Ghana's universities' - Education Minister

Minister for Education, Mathew Opoku-Prempeh

Government has served notice it will soon implement, to the letter a policy that requires only lecturers with doctorate degrees teach in public universities in the country.

At the meet the press event, Tuesday, Education Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh said the move is to ensure that qualified persons teach in the universities.

He has however given lecturers in the universities who are yet to acquire a doctorate degree to do so.

“Now if you don’t hold a Ph.D. and very soon a Ph.D. plus a certificate in Education you will not be able to teach in the university,” he said.

“Most of our College of University lecturers don’t hold the Ph.D. So we have given them time to improve their knowledge and to help improve their capacity,” he added.

He challenged lecturers who fall within that category to take advantage of any opportunity to improve upon their capacity.

“Every capacity improvement will inure to the benefit of Ghanaian school children to improve their learning outcomes.

He did not understand why in Finland Ph.D. holders teach pupils in kindergarten and primary schools yet in Ghana diploma students teach similar grades.

The standard of education of teachers who lecture at all levels in the country’s educational institutions has become a source of worry.

There has been a perception that students turn to teaching profession when they are unable to get admission into the university to pursue courses linked to their dream careers.

Some of the lecturers in the university are also said to be holding only Masters and M.Phil. Qualifications.

The Education Minister said things will change and it will affect every level of education.

“That is why the government took the position that everybody who wants to teach in this country should at least have a degree,” he said.

He added that even though such a decision will have an impact on the government’s budget they are more interested in the churning out better learning outcomes than the “budget governments have been pinching.”

President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana Dr. Eric Opoku Mensah has fully backed the government’s decision.

Speaking to Joy News’ Emefa Apawu, the UTAG president said what the minister is seeking to do is a requirement that has been established already except the commitment to implement it.

Explaining why non-PhD holders are teaching in the universities, Dr. Opoku Mensah said in some areas of study, a university may not have a qualified person to teach a particular course and so they are forced to move lower into Mphil or Masters level in order to get people to teach.

He was however unequivocal that the policy to have only lecturers with Ph.D. at the university level is an international norm.

DCOP Kwasi Mensah Duku, Ashanti Regional Commander

Three persons have been arrested in connection with a shooting incident which left four police officers, including a senior officer, wounded in Asiwa in the Bosome Freho District.

They have been identified as 20-year-old Marcus Anang, Emmanuel Sekyere, 27 and teenager Emmanuel Appiah, 17.

The three were among a group of people who mounted three roadblocks, laid ambush and fired several shots at police officers on Sunday.

The officers, including a District Police Commander, were on a mission to arrest murder suspects in the Ashanti Region town.

The incident occurred at about 12.a.m in Tuffuorkrom near Nsuta.

Asiwa District Commander, ASP Denis Boateng, and four other police personnel sustained severe gunshot wounds.

He was transferred from the New Edubiase Government Hospital to the Accident and Emergency Center at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

The four others have been treated and discharged at the same hospital.

They have been identified as Corporal Samuel Achina, driver of the District Commander, Emmanuel Agyemang and Samuel Antwi, both Community Police Assistants, as well as a driver for the Bosome Freho District Chief Executive, identified as Kennedy Obeng.

The police team, in the company of District BNI officer, were acting on intelligence to arrest suspects believed to have murdered one Moses Obodai who was butchered whilst sending his son to school about two weeks ago.

The suspects who had then escaped mounted three roadblocks and laid ambush on the police unit.

Ashanti Regional Crime Officer, ACP Peter Baba, says the attackers shot at police officers who had then arrested Marcus Anang for possessing a single-barrel gun and three cartridges.

Police explain that the attackers laid ambush and shot into the officers who had attempted to dismantle the second roadblock, injuring the offices in the process.

"Just as they were getting to the roadblock, they saw one person with the single-barreled gun; they ordered him to lay down that arm which he complied and he was arrested.

"There was another barrier in front. Before they got to that roadblock, they heard several gunshots and the police commander was shot in the neck and some parts of the face, and then two CPUs [Community Police Unit] also sustained gunshot wounds," ACP Baba told Journalists.

According to ACP Baba, ASP Boateng who received the neck and facial gunshot wounds and currently on admission at KATH is recovering.

"His condition seems to be stable. We have been told by the medical doctors on duty that a Urologist is supposed to attend to him, an X-ray is supposed to be taken before they can actually know whether his condition is critical or not," he said.

Meanwhile, the police say it is treating the case an attempted murder of the police personnel.

"We are treating it as attempted murder. The attack on the police is an attempt to murder the policemen who went there.

"This is a criminal act which we are taking seriously. It was an attempt to murder the police officers who were performing their mandatory duty," ACP Baba added.

Suspected cannabis, hidden inside a boutique store with a street value of GH¢14,520, was also seized from the woman who receives her consignments from Peki in the Volta Region.

People who invested with Menzgold were 'greedy' – Ken Agyapong

Kennedy Agyapong

People who invested with Menzgold Company Limited did so out of greed, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has said.

According to him, most customers knew that the returns on offer were unreal yet went ahead to invest with the gold dealership firm.

This, the maverick lawmaker said, makes all persons who invested their monies with the company greedy.

“All those who invested in Menzgold are greedy people, how can you invest in financial institutions offering more than the rate normal banks will offer…?” Mr. Agyapong said on Adom TV.

The Assin Central MP also called for the assets of Menzgold CEO Nana Appiah Mensah to be confiscated and sold to defray the debts of the customers.

In recent months, Menzgold, which offers very high returns to customers, has come under the spotlight following several inconclusive tussles with the Bank of Ghana (BoG), the Minerals Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The Central Bank and Minerals Commission maintain that the company has been taking deposits and locally selling gold despite not having the requisite licence to do.

However, the seriousness of the issue was confirmed in September when SEC directed Menzgold to shut down its gold trading activities.

Currently, the operations of the company remain closed to the public, with several customers agitating for a refund of their investments.

Over 19,000 Ghanaians tested positive for HIV in 2017 – AIDS Commission

Over 19,000 Ghanaians tested positive for HIV in 2017 – AIDS Commission.

File photo

The Ghana AIDS Commission has revealed that over 19,000 Ghanaians tested positive for HIV/AIDS in 2017.This, the commission has described as “worrying”, adding that the majority of this number are youths.

The Commission said a total of 19,101 persons tested positive for the virus.

Also, the national prevalence rate stands at 1.67 with 19,101 new infections in 2017 with about 700 deaths.

This was revealed by the Volta Regional HIV Manager, Courage Botchway, who was reportedly speaking at the launch of the 2018 World AIDS Day in Ho.

“Among the general population, the national prevalence is 1.67. It is estimated that in 2017 new infections were 19,101,” Mr. Botchway reportedly said.

He said all is not lost for persons with the HIV virus because there are medications specially designed for such people.

Botchway further urged the public to check their HIV statuses, adding that all hope is not lost when one gets the disease.

“Once you test positive, you are put on ARVs, previously, there were certain criteria that you had to meet before you were put on the medication but from 2017 anybody who is HIV positive has the right to be put on medication once the person is willing,” he added.

Meanwhile, the acting director of the AIDS Commission, Dr. Steve Kyeremeh Atuahene, has disclosed that more of the youth are getting infected with HIV/AIDS.

He said this is as a result of “high-risk sex” which is on the increase among the youths. Explaining further, Dr Atuahene he said “high-risk sex” is the situation whereby one engages in sex with a multiple partners without using protection.

“The statistics are not different [from two years ago]. What is different is that we are seeing more and more infections among young people. And we need to tackle that,” he said.

“There are more and more young people who engage in multiple concurrent partnerships. And some are also involved in serial monogamy – they switch partners over time and in quick succession and that exposes them HIV infections,” Dr. Atuahene added.

Huge number of Presbyterian Ministers seeking divorce - Clerk

Huge number of Presbyterian Ministers seeking divorce - Clerk

File photo: Some Presbyterian Ministers

The Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rev. Dr. Samuel Ayete Nyampong, has revealed that a huge number of Presbyterian ministers want to divorce their wives.

According to him, most of the ministers say they are frustrated with their marriages and want it terminated.

He said most of them have already written letters to the Presbyterian Council seeking permission to dissolve their marriages due to unbearable circumstances.

Rev. Ayete made the disclosure while speaking at the 155th Anniversary celebration of the Ebenezer Congregation - Kyebi, Presbyterian Church of Ghana.

He said Christians generally need to repent and be far away from anything that could lead them into sin.

He said Christians are supposed to emulate the life of Christ, but many people have so far not lived up to that.

In his view, the corruption and other issues facing the country are reflections of the unchristian and corrupt conducts of the followers of Christ.

According to him, such acts not only ruin marriages and homes but also wrecks nations.

"I presented a report to the general assembly on the number of letters that come to my table from ministers requesting to be allowed to divorce their wives, they are frustrated...this calls for repentance,” Rev. Ayete said.

He said there are Christians who “in public show themselves to love one another but they bear grudges in the various homes”.

Such behaviours, he said, must be halted immediately.

A 74-year-old man has been arrested for operating a hospital at Kisseman with nursing training experience obtained from the 37 Military Hospital in the 1970s.

Clinton Osei Kwame Sarfo

Clinton Osei Kwame Sarfo, the suspect, has converted his three-bedroom into a consulting room where he attends to unsuspecting patients. He also uses his living room as the outpatient department.
He was arrested by officers from the investigating team of the Dental and Medical Council and the Achimota Police.

Information
Briefing journalists after the arrest, the Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council, Dr Eli Kwasi Atikpui, said the council received information about the activities of an individual who was practising as a medical doctor in his residence at Kisseman in Accra.                                                               “The suspect is widely known in the area as “doctor" and engages in a wide range of medical treatment for residents in the locality. We found that he could cut open sterilised water or IVF fluids, popularly known as drip, and give it to his patients in a glass for them to drink,” said Dr Atikpui.
When a team of investigators visited his facility located adjacent to the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana, and the Church of Pentecost at Kisseman, they found him attending to patients in his living room.

They also found that he uses an inner room as his dispensary treatment and injection room.He had no nurses, laboratory technicians or any other auxiliary staff assisting him.

Items retrieved
When a search was conducted, the team found a large quality of assorted medications, bags of IV fluids, vials of injectable, cantons of syringes and needles.
The items were retrieved and have since been deposited at the Achimota Police Station.

“We are getting worried over the increasing number of people holding themselves as medical practitioners and the rate at which people are patronising their services,” said Dr Atukpui.
He said Sarfo had “no laboratory, no assistance. In line with standards of care, you don’t just diagnose based on what the patients tell you,” he said.

Humanitarian grounds
Speaking with journalists after his arrest, the suspect admitted that he had been treating people in his residence but explained that he was doing it on humanitarian grounds, as he saw it as a way of assisting people in his community.
He said he was a retired nurse who registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council in 1972 and showed a certificate from the Nursing and Midwifery Council issued in 1972.

Although he could not provide any evidence to show he was in good standing with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, he said he worked with 37 Military Hospital and the Tema Oil refinery (TOR) before his retirement.

“After my retirement, people will come to me when they are sick, and they will refer to me as doctor so I had to help people with minor conditions such as headaches and malaria,” he said.
Sarfo told journalists that he charged between GH¢5 and GH¢15 for his services and that he had plans of quitting at the end of this year.

He is the second suspected quack doctor to be arrested in three weeks by the Medical and Dental Council in Accra.

Assistant headmaster of Kumasi High SHS suspended over sodomy allegations

Assistant headmaster of Kumasi High SHS suspended over sodomy allegations

George Amponsah-Duodu

An Assistant Headmaster at Kumasi High School has been suspended, pending investigations into allegations of sodomy against him.

The 54-year-old year old George Amponsah-Duodu, is accused of engaging in the alleged acts with students of the all-male school.

The Regional Education Directorate has referred the matter to the Disciplinary Committee for further investigations.

A letter signed by Regional Director, Mary Owusu Achiaw, to the Ghana Education Service (GES) Council says the action follows accusation by alleged victims.

Appointed a teacher in 1996, Mr. Amponsah-Duodu, who is married with four kids, became Assistant Headmaster on November 12, 2015, after successfully passing an interview.

Among his topmost responsibilities is ensuring general discipline on campus and supervision of administrative and secretarial staff as well as act generally in the absence of the headmaster.

Some students of the all-male school accused the man in charge of their well-being on campus of sodomizing them.

At least, four alleged victims, one of them a former student leader, have opened up to school authorities on their ordeal from the teacher.

Acting on the leads, authorities submitted a report to the Ghana Education Service, prompting further investigations.

Nhyira News has sighted a letter from the Ashanti Regional Education Directorate, asking Mr. Amponsah -Duodu to step aside pending completion of the process.

Regional Education Director, Mary Owusu Achiaw, issued the directive by a letter dated November 4, 2018, and copied the Chairman of GES Council, Director-General of GES and Metropolitan Director of Education as well as Headmaster and Board Chairman of Kumasi High School.

The letter states the suspension follows accusations by students of the school.

"Following allegations of sodomy against you by students of the Kumasi High School, you are hereby directed to step aside as the Assistant Headmaster (Administration) of the school to allow for smooth investigation into the case," the letter stated.

"Further instructions will be communicated to you after the investigations," the directive continued.

Nhyira News sources say the affected students have been undergoing counselling in school as school authorities decide their fate.

Mr. Amponsah-Duodu, however, denies any wrong-doing but declines to speak on record.

He insists he will direct all question on the issue to the Regional Education Director.

EXCLUSIVE: Mortuary man explains why more youth die lately

It is destined for man to die and after death judgment according to Hebrews 9:27.  But deaths involving the youth in recent times is rather on the high with many believing it is in fulfillment of what has been enshrined in the bible.

But Abdul [not real name] a mortuary man with one of Ghana’s premier hospitals in Accra disagrees with this assertion and explained exclusively to MyNewsGh.com why he thinks otherwise.

“The young ones die a lot these days especially the young boys. Those from age 15 and above mostly teenagers. I become traumatized preparing such teenagers for preservation. It is a very pathetic situation to see someone who is just about to start life die prematurely. The kind of lifestyles of these youth is the cause of these deaths. Some of them in their quest to get rich fast, others as a result of promiscuous lifestyles, snatching of people’s wives and so many unhealthy habits cause these deaths”, he revealed.

According to Abdul, some of the dead bodies before they are embalmed are seen wearing smiling faces with instances of others frowning adding that he has never seen any dead body wake up from the morgue.
